Gurudwara Bangla Sahib - An Epitome of Serenity

‘God is One’.

This is what Guru Nanak taught in his teaching as he quoted,

‘There is one God, who dwells in every one of God’s creation and constitutes the eternal truth.’

With this same thought Baba Nanak founded the religion Sikhism around 1500 CE.

Guru Nanak Dev ji passed his bequest to Guru Angad, which was taken further by 8 successive Gurus namely:-

  • Guru Amar Das Ji

  • Guru Ram Das Ji

  • Guru Arjan Ji

  • Guru Har Gobin Ji

  • Guru Har Rai Ji

  • Guru Har Krishan Ji

  • Guru Teg Bahadur Ji

  • Guru Gobind Singh Ji

Gurudwara Bangla Sahib - The Holy Shrine of Sikhs is related to the 8th Guru-Guru Har Krishan Ji. It was built in 1783 by Sikh General Sardar Baghel Singh. It originally belonged to Raja Jai Singh, a senior general of the Mughal Empire and ruler of the kingdom of Ajmer in 17th Century and was also known to be Jai Singh Pura Palace.

The shrine, situated in Connaught place, New Delhi is said to be constructed on a site where Guru Har Krishan Ji, spent several months spreading and promoting the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The Gurudwara is beautifully constructed with Marble stones, carved by hands of incredible craftsmen of the time. It has decorated floors and onion domes which are embellished with Gold.

Inside the premises of Gurudwara, there is a kitchen which serves meals to thousands of devotees nonstop every day. This meal is named as ‘Langar’ which means serving free food as charity. The food served in Langar is cooked and served with all the safety measures and is one of the most delicious meals you can ever have.

The astounding infrastructure of the Gurudwara also has a Higher Senior Secondary School, A Library, A Hospital and A large pond called Sarovar. It is believed that the water in the Sarovar is said to have healing qualities which is absolutely magical. It is also called Amrit Sarovar.

The serenity of the place gives you immense peace and directly connects you to the divine energies. The tranquility of the place makes you feel as if you’ve entered in God’s heaven. The calmness gives you a sense of purity, wholesomeness and divinity.

Sikhs are also known for their selflessness, helpfulness, commitment, and sincerity towards mankind. The Guru Granth Sahib-Holy book of Sikhs quotes,

‘Through selfless services, eternal peace is obtained.’

The glimpse of this can be seen in the Gurudwara where hundreds of self-volunteers can be seen doing different chores all round the clock. They call it as Sewa for their mankind.

Nanak teaches,

‘Before becoming a Muslim, a Sikh, a Hindu or a Christian, let’s become humans first.’

Keeping humanity first and selflessly helping others is one of the main teachings of Baba Nanak and this essence can be felt and seen in the magnificent Gurudwara Bangla Sahib - An Epitome of Serenity.
