Shanti Stupa, Leh – A Peaceful Heaven

Being a wanderer is a quest that gets fulfilled only when you explore new places; places that have their own story to tell, the uniqueness that creates an uncontrollable urge to know more about that place. It is said, India is one of the most gifted country in terms of nature. The natural beauty here is so divine that it feels as if you are in God’s Heaven.

Let’s talk about one such place which an absolute example of serene beauty and subtleness: Shanti Stupa, Leh. It was built in 1991 with joint efforts of Japanese Buddhist Bhikshu, Gyomyo Nakamura and a part of Peace Pagoda Mission. Shanti Stupa not only carries its religious significance but also, it’s incredible location, which is situated in Chanspa, Leh District.



Having located on the hilltop of Chanspa, Shanti Stupa has a stunning panoramic view of Leh city. It looks incredibly beautiful to see that how such small city is based for years and conserving the nature’s gift. The surroundings of Shanti Stupa and the monument itself have so much of peace that it gives immense amount of relaxation to the brain.

It takes around 1.5 hours to reach Shanti Stupa from Leh. There are basically two ways to reach there; one is via road and other is via village. It is highly recommended to take the route via village because the view is more beautiful as you go through the village. As you wander in the market of Leh, you can easily spot Shanti Stupa gloriously sitting on the hilltop from there.


Shanti Stupa is known for significance to promote peace and prosperity and to commemorate its 2500 years of Buddhism. It is a symbol of the ties between the people of Ladakh and Japan. It is built in such a way that it catches the perfect view of Sunset and Sunrise. So, if someone is a big time fan of having a perfect view of Sunsets and Sunrises, then they should definitely visit this place.
